Toompea Castle houses the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia – the Riigikogu – since 1922. The building stands on the site of a former convent, behind a provincial administration building resembling a city palace. It can be seen as a metaphor for Estonian culture emerging from Baltic German, Russian, and Swedish influences. It was completed in 1922 by architects Herbert Johanson and Eugen Habermann at the height of their careers. The exhibition “Riigikogu Hoone 100” was created for the building’s 100th anniversary. It spans the entire house without a single focal point. Symbolic geometric forms of varying dimensions are placed throughout the building, even in unexpected locations. Their modernist style contrasts with the historic interior, marking a festive moment. This intervention acts as an allegory for the birth of parliamentary democracy and the emergence of a modern social order.
