More than 700 years old, Hermann Castle in Narva has been ruled by Danes, Germans, Swedes and Russians, and now belongs to Estonia. It gained its current form during the Livonian Order in the 14th–16th centuries. Heavily damaged in the Second World War, it was restored in the 1970s and 1980s before opening as a museum. In June 2020, reconstruction was completed as part of the “Opening of the Border Castle Discovery Centre” project, making the previously inaccessible east wing open to visitors. That summer, a new permanent exhibition opened, presenting the castle’s history from the first Danish settlers to today.
