In 2018, the Museum of Occupations repositioned itself from a memory institution focused on the past to a reflection centre looking toward the future. “Freedom” became the central concept. While often seen as given, freedom is in fact fragile, even for an independent nation. The mission of the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom is to raise awareness of this.
The leitmotif, a notched letter “V” (for vabadus, meaning freedom), symbolises this fragility and connects to the museum’s earlier identity. Double-exposure illustrations highlight the importance of shared memory.
